Chapter 13 Section 1


CH 13 Sec 1
1.     What are the qualifications for becoming a representative?
a.     Must be 25 years old
b.     Citizens of the US for 7 years
c.      Legal residents of the states that represent them
2.     What did congress limit the number of representatives in 1929?
a.     They feared the House would become unmanageable due to its size
b.     435 seats at a maximum are given out since 1929
3.     What is Gerrymandering?  What did the term come from?
a.     The political party that has the majority in a state legislature draws district’s (voting) boundaries to gain an advantage in elections
b.     Elbridge Gerry, a previous governor of Massachusetts designed a district plan that gave his party a big advantage over the Federalists
4.     What are the qualifications for becoming a senator?
a.     Must be 30 years old
b.     Citizens of the US for 9 years before election
c.      Legal representatives of the states they represent
5.     What is a censure? 
a.     A vote of formal disapproval of a member’s actions
b.     These are lesser offences
6.     What are the characteristics of congress member?
a.     ½ of Congress are lawyers, large number of bankers/businessmen/educators
b.     Typically white, middle-aged males
c.      There has been more diversity in recent years including an increase in women, African-Americans, Asian-Americans, and Hispanics representatives
